No, but seriously, you're overthinking things. Midwinter's not about putting up appearances. It's a reminder to care about people you care about, to show that you think of them and hold their memories dearly. If people are shallow, the gift-giving bit about it is just demonstrating that you can give financial support, which is how this whole thing became a unstoppable torrent of bad decisions in the first place.

But if you actually care about them, and they about you, then you already know what they might need, and it doesn't need to be expensive because it actually is the thought that counts.
