A type of droid where I'm from that helps pilot ships.

What so are humans in your world too stupid to pilot ships on their own?

No. A lot of ships don't come with astromech ports.

The droid usually acts as a mechanic while in flight but they can distribute power, fly, make hyperspace jumps or anything else if a pilot can't. They can be on anything from luxury ships to starfighters to dreadnoughts.

They're programmed with sentience, able to think and feel for themselves. I don't know the particulars of the hardware, though. You'd have to ask BB-8 himself.
