[ The screen blips on to Hunk, reclined across a couch. Balmogra the moogle's pom-pom occasionally drifts into the top of the frame, and Hunk's eyes keep glancing towards it. As he starts talking, he's entirely oblivious to the fact that his voice is high-pitched and squeaky. ]

Hey, so with other people asking about things like our stories, our worlds, and our jobs, I realized that we don't actually know a lot about what we can all do! Like... I learned that some people have never been grocery shopping before! Or some can't cook! Or some people don't know how technology here works. Since we're all stuck here, we might as well try to help each other out, right? So what are some things you know or want to know?

Me, I know about cooking and engineering and mechanics. But I don't know anything about magic. Or how to defend yourself from a monster that's up close and trying to eat you. Or how to use a giant fork in a fight? Or why they use forks here to begin with.

[ He pauses for a moment, looking almost uncomfortable, and then- ]

And if you're embarrassed to say something you can't do, you can always send it to me and I'll mention it for you!

Ether is a kind of power. Not everyone can use it, but those that can are able to accomplish a number of abilities by manipulating the power to do certain things. I'm not really much of an Ether user myself, Elly is much better at it than I am, she can do things like summon waves of fire or lightning storms.

Wow...

[ Hunk is understandably surprised. Elly doesn't seem like the sort to be able to throw fire and lightning around! But he can't stop wondering. ]

Maybe that's why the Lions chose us as their pilots? Because we're... better at Ether.

[ Or whatever the language is- he's sure he'll figure it out later. He tries to hide a little smile, but he does very, very poorly. ]

So how do we know how much Ether I have? Is there some kind of blood test or something?

That's a good question, I'll have to check with Elly that's more her department. Gears can definitely react to high Ether, especially Omnigears, so it is definitely possible. I have to ask though, are your Lions actually alive? It sounds like they are but I'm not sure.

They're alive. [ Hunk laughs, and takes another sip of his coffee. ]

Each Lion chooses its pilot based off certain traits they favor. [ He pauses for a moment, figuring out his train of thought, because he could just go for days. ] Mine is the Yellow Lion, and it's a fan of people who are kind and support the people around them.

[ And sure he just inflated his own ego a bit, but Hunk can't help but smile. ] They don't talk but they have this psychic link with us- Yellow's unlocked new abilities and he's told me when to use them.

That's how we control Omnigears as well. There are no controls in our cockpit but we control the Gears with our minds. Although you don't have to be able to use Ether to control one, so that might rule out that theory.

Huh, that's cool...

[ Hunk takes a moment to line up everything Fei's said. There's a bit of a difference between Gears and the Lions, now. ]

We definitely have controls in the Lions' cockpits. But if a Lion doesn't want you to pilot it, then it's not going to happen. They just shut down and throw up a barrier.

Interesting.

[Fei ponders for a moment]

Do they always respond the same way to the controls? Or would you say it's more like reins, where you use it to direct but not directly control an animal?

They sure do respond the same way each time, that'd be weird if they didn't.

[ And he starts laughing at the idea of the Lions piloting themselves out of embarrassing situations. If only. ]

That means the mistakes are all ours, because if the Lion picks us then it trusts us to make our own decisions. [ He smirks. ]

Unless they have something cool to show us. Like a new laser cannon.

Now that's what I'm not quite clear on. How exactly do they let you know they have something they want you to use?

I... just kinda know. [ He stares off into the distance for a second. ]

In my brain. No, my gut. Both? There's the feeling that the Lion is telling us, except not literally since it's... telepathic?

[ He chuckles awkwardly. ] I, uh... never really questioned it.
