01. AIRSHIPS!! [Text]

I didn't know we were gonna get the chance to get our own airships! I know I missed being able to wake up and see nothing but sky and clouds out the window. Made drying the laundry a lot easier, too.

But that kinda got me thinking- you couldn't get very far without an airship back where I came from, but a lot of the people I've talked to have said they've never seen anything like them before! I know a few people here have had SOME sort of flying machine back in their world, though. If yours did too, I gotta know- what were they like?

For that matter, how many other pilots do we HAVE here, anyway?

People keep talking about spaceships- does that mean you humans actually left your planet? Why? Did you find someplace better?

What happened to earth?

Most humans haven't left Earth. But we're a curious species, we wanted to see just what is out there. And who.

Even something as simple as asking how the universe was made requires some exploring and studying.

What did you find out there?

If you were a military spaceship pilot, I'm guessing it wasn't good.

We've found a lot of things over the years. There are nine planets in our solar system with various make-ups. And data gathered has revolutionized our understanding of the universe.

My being military isn't about what we found. Over time our society had a central hub for space faring expeditions. Military training and surviving on a spaceship go sort of hand in hand.

[He's not going to discuss Kerberos and how that mission failed over a public network.]

Oh, it was how you got your pilot training. I get it.

What about those other planets? Does that mean you got to visit them? What were they like? I've only seen them through a telescope.

Since I got my present job as a Paladin of Voltron...we've visited a lot of planets. I think the one that sticks with me even now is a living creature called a Balmera.

When it was restored and the sun came up, it was beautiful. But there was also Olkarion. The people of that planet were builders that could shape metal with touch and thought.

When we got there they had been driven out of their city. But, that didn't stop them. They learned how to shape nature the same way. They even made tree mechs. I couldn't pilot one but I got to see it done. They were incredible.

So you got to defend the Earth, travel to other planets, see the coolest stuff on each one, AND you got to be a spaceship pilot with your own combining mecha?!

Where can I sign up for a job like that?!

Technically defend Earth. We had to lead the war away from the planet.

I haven't seen my home planet in about two years. And isn't what we're doing now sort of like visiting somewhere else and getting cool new skills?

[Oof, never mind. Having to spend that long a million miles from home couldn't have been all that fun. Maybe he shouldn't dwell too long on the taste of his own foot.]

Yeah, I guess you're right. Not exactly what I would have wanted in a vacation, though. They could've at least given me my airship.

Sure, that would be great! Biggs and Wedge brought back the Black Lion too. Powered down right now, but...

Anyway maybe your airship will show up sometime. Whole airships have been found in the Dream Width.

It just needs to recharge. ...have you noticed anything odd about Dahak since you got it back? To be specific, things not working as they should.

Dang. I wouldn't have minded a look under the hatch of that thing.

Yeah-- its structure and hydraulics are all weak now. Not sure what happened but the fight's been taken right out of it. It runs, but I can't take it up against a monster like this!!

Guess I have to wait for that Magitek armor after all..

The jetpack, communications, and particle shield parts of my armor are all unavailable. My prosthetic arm used to have a lot more strength and could activate as a weapon.

Now it's only as strong as my other arm and the weaponizing doesn't work.

Wait, that arm's fake? And it has WEAPONS??

[I mean, Red can't exactly say 'lucky' to that, but... that IS pretty cool.]

I thought it was just some weird armor piece!

Why would I wear armor on only one arm? And it didn't have weapons, it had a weapon mode.

[Does EVERYONE from this space-exploring lion-piloting world just get all the cool toys and tools to play with?!]

What kind of weapon? Lasers? Missiles? You gotta show me when you get that thing working again!

It charges with energy and I can cut things with my hand. I'm not sure if it can get working again. Magic foreign to this plane seems to just stop.

If you don't mind answering, what are airships like in your home universe?

Augh, fine... at least you've still got it working as a boring old NORMAL hand, though.

Oh, you should see them!! I lived on a small one, but some really powerful guilds have got airships practically as big as a castle or city on their own. (Those ones were pretty rare, though.)

They're all a bit more advanced than the ones you see here, though. Better engines, usually big wings too.

It's not normal. It's slightly colder than the other one. [His joke is awful but let that one go.]

So, it might be possible with enough study for you to improve an airship from here?

I thought about it! They've got an awfully big price tag, though, and I don't know if I could even GET the parts I'd need around here.

Besides, I can do some mechanical work but that'd be pretty hardcore stuff. I'm good, but I don't know if I'm retrofit-an-entire-airship good.
