Coin and Country

Good day everyone, I trust everyone is well this day.

I have a proposition to benefit everyone. Since our arrival, I have looked into investing what little coin I have managed to earn into the local markets and economy and I have managed to wring coin from whatever I have found profitable. That being said, I would like to extend some of my findings to those who are looking to turn a profit.

My nation has a saying: For Coin and Country. One cannot found those airships without coin, and certainly without capital. It will be laborious but everyone needs to chip in.

If you wish to discuss business, I will be at my home, for the following week.

[Lady Ashelia... the name was familiar, wasn't she... oh dear... well, the stories aside of her passing in Eorzea aside, Nanamo was familiar with the name, if not the face. But lest aside, she would reply.]

Dear Lady Ashelia,

Of course. Would luncheon on the terrace be permissible? Say elevenses on the 11th of this month?

Ashelia shows up precisely on time, of course, in her red mage outfit, though her sword has been left behind. She knocks politely on Nanamo's door, going over her proposal again and again in her head. How is she going to convince someone she doesn't even know that getting involved with such unsavory characters is a good idea? Even Ashelia knows it isn't. And yet, the time they have is limited, and the connections could be useful in their search for Bahamut's summoner, not to mention the potential return on investment...

The door opens as Papashan answers it with a bow. "Good morning, Lady Ashelia," greeted Papashan. "Her Grace awaits you on the veranda this morning. Elevenses will be served momentarily. Please follow me."

He led her towards the veranda where the ruler stood, smiling as she bowed politely at her guest. "Welcome, I hope your trip was successfully pleasant?"

Ashelia nods politely at Papashan, but offers a deeper bow to Nanamo. "A short walk, and the weather is pleasant enough. 'Tis an honor to make your acquaintance, Lady Nanamo." She looks around approvingly. "I do appreciate your seeing me so quickly. Given the deadline we're all bound to, the more swiftly we organize, the better."

"The pleasure is all mine," said Nanamo as she smiled in reply, sketching a bow in return as she showed Ashelia to the veranda. My she did look stunningly like the ahem, former late lady Ashelia of Dalmasca if reports were correct.

"I hoped to reach out to likeminded individuals considering the information we had obtained during the royal dinner," said Nanamo. "My own personal finances have become stable through business deals on a small level, and I am in a position to start striking out."

"Your Grace," said Papashan. "Elevenses is ready."

"Ah yes, please Lady Ashelia, come eat with me, I'm sure you're hungry to the trip to the city."

Ashelia followed Nanamo, hands clasped behind her back. "A spot of food would not go amiss. My moogle is on his way with some wine, if it please you." He should be, anyway. The louse had forgotten to pick up a bottle the day before, or else Ashelia would have presented Papashan with the bottle at the door, of course.

"My proposal is...somewhat risky. However, the situation being what it is, I do believe it necessary to keep all avenues open." Her preface over, Ashelia takes a seat.

"While in the Empire, I made some inquiries into the local markets, materials that are in high demand now that the border is open, other such things. As you can imagine, it's a large market. One would stand to make quite a bit of gil if one were to get in on the ground floor, so to speak." Ashelia crosses her legs. "My inquiries led me to a man known as Don Corneo who, seeing the potential benefits, was eager to back my proposal."

"That would be pleasant yes. For now, let us indulge, eleveneses is served."

Taking a seat after seeing to Ashelia's seating, Nanamo hopped up on her chair on the veranda table as Papashan flitted over with the food.

"I see," said Nanamo. "Coin investment in a local market is ever such a lucrative spot for someone who has ever managed to get their foot in a door. This I know much," said Nanamo as Papashan served up the Eleveneses, pouring the tea for the pair for them and served up the first course, a light set of biscuits and fennel salad.

"Being sealed off for so long would cause some markets to become... tranformative," she said, using Lolorito's words carefully. "Spices especially, and travel."

Ashelia nodded along with Nanamo. "My thoughts exactly, and the Don's. For his part, he was looking for a someone to represent his interests in the eastern nations, as well as in Min'To. He agreed that I seemed like the best candidate. An outworlder, of noble birth, and a former Hero of Light."

The young queen shifts in her seat, tilting her head. "This is, of course, where it gets complicated. The Don's interests are...not altogether wholesome, to say the least. Or, often, precisely legal." It was here, of course, where she paused for a sip of tea.

"Understandable," said Nanamo. "Long have I toiled to keep my nation together with many hands dipping into it's coin, laundered from many sources. While I am not skilled in the ability to prepare funds for less than wholesome ventures, I can say however, I can procure funding for a legal side of things."

"What I can however contribute, is the Ul'dan merchant sensibility, and the ability to wring every onze of coin from this joint venture we need in our favor."

"Just so." Ashelia raised her tea cup at that before taking another sip. "To be clear, I've no interest in supporting the Don in any of his more...morally objectionable pursuits. My goals are strictly financial in nature, and to use whatever connections I may garner in our pursuit of the summoner. There will be a line to walk, but I will be the one to walk it. I'll not involve you or any of the others."

"So you'll be our shield in the darkness," said Nanamo. "A fine endeavor."

She smiled and tucked into her salad for a moment. "I take it that your judgment is sound then, that the Don's financial burden will be lifted to our advantage? What markets did he mention that will burden our coinpurse?"

Shield in the darkness? Ashelia scoffed, shaking her head. "Nothing so grandiose. There are, however, an alarming amount of children that have been brought here as Heroes. The adolescents I'm not as worried about, but the younger ones..."

The young queen cleared her throat, shaking her head. "None of your money will go to the Don directly, if I can help it. What I need funding for is a portion of the jobs I'll be responsible for - for example, this shipment of squid from the Chronic Sea I'm currently arranging. The Don is allowing me use of one of his transport airships, but I'm to provide my own fuel, supplies and staff. As you can imagine, so newly arrived, I've not the gil to sink into the endeavor myself."

"And the capital you will need provided to kickstart such a endeavor will be substantial. Very well, I can provide the legal start on this request." said Nanamo.

"What I ask in return is to see the paperwork so that I can wring every onze of profit from this situation, so that I may bleed the Don dry of coin without the hammer befelling the Heroes. I have no love for organized crime you see."

Ashelia nodded. "Of course. I ask only this; that you do so slowly and subtly enough that he does not begin to suspect our true purpose."

She sighed, now shaking her head. "I have no more love for organized crime than you do, I assure you, but we must needs allow him and his men to operate more or less normally until I've earned their trust fully. At least one of his men is already suspicious."

"Fair enough," said Nanamo as the second course came out, a wonderfully grilled roast for the two of them to share.

"Dancing among the weeds is going to take more skillful navigation than both of us combined."

Ashelia tilted her head to the side, murmuring a soft thank you to the moogle as the second course was served. "Perhaps. I do not intend to involve the others overmuch...but I will need people I can trust to guard the shipment, and the most obvious solution is to solicit the help of our fellow Heroes. I plan to hold interviews soon to that end."

"Manpower is an issue. There is an excellent amount of people here who we can trust," said Nanamo. "Sending a careful call to those who would become adventurers in our aid could very well turn the tide of our needs."

The young queen nodded, digging into the roast. "I've two or three in mind, my former comrades from Crystallis. Combatants all, well trained or experienced enough to make no difference."

She paused, having tasted the roast. "This is excellent. Lady Nanamo, you simply must give me the recipe."

"That will be good then, and it will help in the long run."

"Papashan is an excellent cook," said Nanamo with a smile. "I will let him write up the recipe before you depart."
